Prior to launching his financial services career, Peter served five and a half years on active duty as a line officer in the US Navy. In April of 1982 he joined the Norfolk office of Merrill Lynch, one month before Mark Tekamp. After Merrill Lynch, Peter worked as a retail stockbroker, commercial paper trader, stock loan broker and portfolio manager, all with Ferris & Company, where he met Bob Sullivan. Additionally, he held leadership positions in sales, marketing, and operations in the insurance industry.
At Capitol American Financial, as head of marketing, he led the most successful product launch in corporate history and was instrumental in achieving sales of $92 million, representing 40% of annual new premium revenue growth. When the company conducted its IPO on the NYSE, Peter was promoted to Senior Vice President, Corporate Secretary, and Director of Investor Relations. His efforts in these roles helped double analyst coverage from 2 to 4 and increase institutional ownership 20%.
At American Heritage Life Insurance Company Peter headed the new Strategic Alliance and Special Markets unit, leading the effort to grow sales over 150% in 12 months. He also worked closely with the Compliance, Underwriting, and Legal Departments to establish effective business decision parameters for underwriting high risk cases.
