Prior to launching his financial services career, Peter served five and a half years on active duty as a line officer in the US Navy. In early 1982 he joined the Norfolk office of Merrill Lynch, one month before Mark Tekamp, the original founder of HWMG, joined. After Merrill Lynch, Peter worked as a retail stockbroker, commercial paper trader, stock loan broker and portfolio manager, before shifting to the insurance side of the financial services industry in 1989. Over the next 25 years he held leadership positions in sales, marketing, investor relations and operations with several companies before retiring from this field at the end of 2015.
Mark approached Peter shortly after his “retirement” with his vision for a model advisory practice, and consequently, he joined HWMG in January of 2019, specifically to help HWMG grow and lead the effort to become transformational in the industry. As he says to anyone who will listen, “The world does not need just another RIA. What it needs is an RIA with HWMG’s values and philosophy.”
Peter earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, and the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®) professional designation from The American College. He has served in leadership roles on several charitable Boards and veteran and civic organizations including the Amherst County Board of Zoning Appeals, the Rotary Club of Amherst (Past President and Paul Harris Fellow), the Military Order of the World Wars, Piedmont Chapter (Vice Commander) and the Norfolk Community Services Board (former Chairman.) He lives in Amherst, VA with his wife, Jean, and they have three grown children. In his spare time, Peter enjoys UVa sporting events, hunting, golf, and shelling on the beach in Sanibel.
