Mark has had an extensive and rewarding career in the financial services industry. He started out at Merrill Lynch in 1982 as a financial advisor and then in 1987 moved to Prudential-Bache Securities. After three years he went to Paine Webber, where he honed his abilities in the industry for nearly six years, being recognized for his outstanding client relationships. He then migrated to Smith Barney as a Second Vice President and Financial Consultant where he continued to experience “hands on” how the financial services industry functions.
Possessing a high degree of empathy both for those he works for and with, Mark came to realize that the most important value that his clients assign to their wealth is not what it is, but what it does — providing for the needs of those whom they love and will leave behind…spouses, children, grandchildren, and institutions that they believe have the capacity to improve life in the world. Not underestimating the great importance of growing clients’ assets while protecting their value, Mark came to realize that an equally significant part of the client relationship was for him to enter more deeply into their lives and, as much as possible, fully comprehend and embrace their aspirations.
The more intimately Mark sought to work with his clients, the more apparent it became to him that his employer’s priorities were not always compatible with his understanding of how to provide caring and responsible service for those who entrusted him. In 2004 he, and several of his colleagues, founded Heritage Wealth Management Group. It soon became evident that the placing of the client’s interests ahead of the self-interests of himself and the firm was the best foundational principal on which to anchor the business. Over the succeeding fifteen years, the satisfaction level and loyalty of Mark’s clients has been revealed through his being provided the opportunity to work with many clients’ children and grandchildren.
Realizing that there were other advisors who sought to emulate his approach towards client relationship management, Mark came to believe the need existed to create a financial advisory practice in which the firm would create a relationship with its advisors worthy of serving as a model for how the firm’s advisors would serve their clients. Increasingly, Mark was captured by the vision of an advisory firm with the client at the top of the hierarchy and with the totality of the firm’s resources focused on supporting the advisors’ primary professional purpose for being: serving the client and helping them successfully achieve their life’s objectives and purpose.
In the past several years Mark has shared his thoughts with others who passionately embrace this vision. Today, after 37 years working in and studying the industry, Mark is now walking alongside a team of entrepreneurial professionals, all with the same high level of dedication toward growing Heritage Wealth Management Group into a company that offers an opportunity to not only help clients reach their life goals, but to also offer a path where advisors can pursue their profession in a fashion offering themselves and their families true meaning and purpose.
Mark resides in the Ghent area of Norfolk and is married to Margie. He is the father of one daughter and three sons, including twin boys who are recent college graduates. A graduate of Virginia Tech, he claims to bleed Hokie maroon and orange. A serious walker of thousands of miles over more than ten years, while indulging his love of listening to works of history he also claims to be one of the few actually able to describe the sources and consequences of the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 in such a manner that his listener can actually understand what is being described.
